Back in the 1970s, Wynwood was a collection of aging warehouses. That was, until the early 2000’s, when entrepreneur, historic preservationist, developer, restaurateur, hotelier and a patron of the arts, Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties, saw its potential. He established Wynwood Walls in 2009 as an outdoor museum of international street art. The first year's program-featured Kenny Scharf, Futura, Os Gemeos, Swoon, Shepard Fairey, and other renowned innovators in street art.

It is now one of the best venues in the world to see the work of leading street artists, and has been transformed into an open air art museum that covers over 80,000 square feet of wall space and has seen over 70 artists representing 16 countries. This oasis of street art is visited and walked by captivated audiences and channels art and creativity from around the world. It’s a spectacular outdoor destination where artists’ imaginations are realized and global art and culture are celebrated in the Wynwood Art District in Miami. 

Although it is known as a canvas for urban street art, when you visit the massive space, it takes you on a visual adventure that transforms your imagination beyond the urban landscape in which it exists.  On my recent visit, I took some great photos to memorialize my tour. However, I must say, no matter how good my photos were, they didn’t take the place of seeing the all-encompassing sea of art and color everywhere I looked. 

Wynwood Walls attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world each year. It’s open everyday and the most popular time to visit is on the second Saturday of every month, during Wynwood Art Walk, which turns the entire Wynwood Arts District into a late-night street party and arts festival.
